But in Savannah the first question people ask you is ‘What would you like to drink?’” (Also from “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”)
I suppose it was natural, given her name, that Chablis would come to California. She didn’t like the name growing up, but grew to rationalize it. It could have been worse. Her parents could have named her something like “Port” or “Mourvedre”.
So, after a year in college, she moved west. She finished her education, and got a job in a small winery near Annapolis, on the Sonoma County coast. She enjoys living in the cool, windswept, sparsely populated area; it’s close enough, though, to allow her a couple of visits each year to Infineon Raceway, to stay in touch with her passion for NASCAR (that’s the only place, by the way, that she drinks Chablis).
Visitors to the winery are continually surprised to encounter such an elegant hostess. When they learn her name, the conversation is on, and they leave feeling they’ve made a real friend.
Chablis learned the fine art of gracious entertaining in her childhood in Savannah. She has a wide circle of friends, from all walks of life, and is known for her hospitality from Jenner to Albion. It’s not unusual to encounter artists, winemakers, fishermen, carpenters, and perhaps a state senator or two at her parties.
