Background

Born: Savannah, Georgia

Favorite Color: Red

School: Notre Dame Academy, Savannah
One year at Savannah State
AA from Indian Valley College, Novato, California

Favorite Singer: Johnny Mercer

Favorite Sport: NASCAR (although she still has a soft spot for the Georgia Bulldogs)

Brush with fame: She met Richard Petty at the Atlanta Motor Speedway when she was nine.

Favorite literary character: The Lady Chablis (naturally) from “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”.

Favorite quotation: “If you go to Atlanta, the first question people ask you is, ‘What’s your business?’ In Macon they ask, ‘Where do you go to church?’ In Augusta they ask your grandmother’s maiden name. But in Savannah the first question people ask you is ‘What would you like to drink?’” (Also from “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”)

I suppose it was natural, given her name, that Chablis would come to California. She didn’t like the name growing up, but grew to rationalize it. It could have been worse. Her parents could have named her something like “Port” or “Mourvedre”.

So, after a year in college, she moved west. She finished her education, and got a job in a small winery near Annapolis, on the Sonoma County coast. She enjoys living in the cool, windswept, sparsely populated area; it’s close enough, though, to allow her a couple of visits each year to Infineon Raceway, to stay in touch with her passion for NASCAR (that’s the only place, by the way, that she drinks Chablis).

Visitors to the winery are continually surprised to encounter such an elegant hostess. When they learn her name, the conversation is on, and they leave feeling they’ve made a real friend.

Chablis learned the fine art of gracious entertaining in her childhood in Savannah. She has a wide circle of friends, from all walks of life, and is known for her hospitality from Jenner to Albion. It’s not unusual to encounter artists, winemakers, fishermen, carpenters, and perhaps a state senator or two at her parties.

Background

Born: Plainwell, Michigan

Favorite Color: Blue

School: Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo

Favorite Band: Red Hot Chili Peppers

Favorite Sport: Baseball, as practiced by the Detroit Tigers

Brush with fame: Had lunch with Madeline Albright and Coretta Scott King in Chicago.

Favorite books: Anything by Willa Cather

Favorite quotation: “Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” --Groucho Marx

Wendy is an accomplished graphic artist, with her own company and a studio in Port Costa, California, at the north end of San Francisco Bay. She creates web pages and corporate identity campaigns for clients all around Northern California, and, as geography is not a limiting factor where computer work is concerned, in farther flung areas of the country.

Given her upbringing in Michigan, Wendy doesn’t think it ever really gets cold in California. To the amazement of natives, she isn’t fazed by the prevailing wind on the Carquinez Straits, and even takes in night games when the Tigers are in town to play the A’s with few complaints and fewer warm clothes.

Her clients—and her friends—know Wendy as a person of limitless energy, who has the rare ability to juggle countless demands on her time yet still be absolutely, completely present with whomever she is visiting or working with at any given moment.

Wendy was amazed, on her first visit to California, by the groves of Redwood trees along the coast. She discovered them at Purisima Creek in San Mateo County. The feeling of peace, physical as well as spiritual, stole over her like the coastal fog. She knew then that this is where she belonged.

She still enjoys trips to the Redwoods. And border collies. And Marx Brothers movies. And eggnog lattes.

Wanda

Name: Wanda

Status: Commissioned and Delivered

Style: Original Art, Linen and Fabric, Full size

Background

Born: Groton, Connecticut

Favorite Quotation: Nobody can make you feel inferior without your permission.
-Eleanor Roosevelt-

Brush with fame: Author of the critically acclaimed “The Turkey that Wasn’t Alive”

Car she drove to the prom: Red Hyundai (Icky boyfriend Alan didn’t have insurance—and he needed it!)

Résumé highlights: Army Reserve, taught 4H cooking class, a local Baby Zoo, and an incredibly successful little start-up called Continuums!

Wanda has never been short on confidence, which helps when you’re occasionally too trusting of other people. He friends describe her as charming, thoughtful, gracious and generous. She is very clear about communicating her wishes, which may explain how, as a child, she talked two total strangers out of their banana up on Mount St. Helena.

When she was young, Wanda was one of the first Fast Talkers of America. Her mother, on occasion, needed a translator to figure out what Wanda was talking about.

Her speed in speaking must have affected her driving as well, at least at the beginning. Wanda knew that she was born with purely natural driving ability, and could not understand why that was not universally acknowledged. In her first attempt, navigating a Datsun pick-up truck around in the driveway, she red-lined the tach, burned rubber, and punched a hole in the fence. After that, the family decided on a slightly heftier vehicle, and a considerably larger field of operations. Literally. The field was a pasture, and the vehicle was a tractor.

A childhood trait that Wanda has maintained into adulthood is a willingness to talk to anyone about anything. She has, we hope, put aside her favorite childhood outfit—boots and a pink teddy—for more classic attire.

Wanda is very serious about her career as a tech company Project Manager. She loves her two cats. She enjoys movies, working out, fast cars, and, most of all Wanda is passionate about her new found love for the little girls in her life.
